Assistant Commercial Quantity Surveyor (Main Contracting) - West Sussex

The Role: We are looking for an experienced Assistant Commercial Quantity Surveyor with bags of energy and a passion for numbers to help win and deliver projects.

My client is a busy main contractor working across the defence and security sectors – in the UK and overseas. Their projects have taken them to the Caribbean, Nigeria, Mali, Mozambique, the Middle East and everywhere in between. Projects range from £250K to £3M, this is a new role they are creating following a successful first three years of operating.

You will need to be a self-starter with excellent communication skills and avid attention to detail. You will be squeaky clean enough to already hold DV security clearance or be willing to go through the process.

You’ll need enthusiasm, and a can-do outlook that will see you able to tackle any task that comes up at short notice. They promise that you will enjoy working with them and that they will help you grow your capabilities; you might get a suntan at the same time. The position is south coast – based with remote working to suit and interim worldwide travel.

You will be required to support the Commercial Manager in all commercial aspects of the projects. Both in the UK and abroad.

Requirements for the Assistant Commercial Quantity Surveyor:

  • Researching materials, equipment and labour costs in weird and wonderful locations

  • Gathering quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers

  • Assessing the levels of risk on a project

  • Analysing company data, exchange rates

  • Preparing and submitting tenders

  • Support the Project Managers with raising variations and valuations

  • Managing sub-contractors

  • Assisting CVRs and monitoring the stages of a project to make sure that costs are kept in line with forecasts

  • Ensure financial success of projects especially by improving forecasting systems and ensuring opportunity for disallowed costs is shut down promptly

Person Specification:

The successful candidate is likely to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid security clearance (however this is not essential for the right individual)

  • Evidence new ways of thinking which deliver benefits

  • Willing to travel with an eyes wide open approach to life and people

  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge of relevant software

  • Ability to solve problems efficiently

  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel

  • Ability to effectively prioritise a busy workload and meet project deadlines

  • Ability to influence others

  • Degree qualified, or equivalent (however, for the right individual they would support a university pathway while working)
